/message in bottle'

he stands along the beach,

staring far off the distance.

staring at the setting sun,

he slowly drifts into the water.

he wanders without a thought,

just slowly wandering, aimlessly forward

he looks down, looking down below him,

he sees the waves brush against his feet,

all he feels is his hope slowly washing away.

he strides silently forward,

forward into the cold sea,

forgetting all reason,

all he feels is emptiness.

he treads further on,

turning his back on his past,

ignoring all advice,

he seeks to live a new life.

life's just another popularity poll

I seriously do not know how I came to that conclusion but I seriously feel that life has gone to that stage where popularity matters more than just being yourself. Its much harder being yourself as everyone just seems to be so against it. One cannot be special in this world which demands conformation. Getting people to accept you seems more important that staying true to yourself and accepting it. Take the incredibles for example. Syndrome was only created when Mr incredile did not allow bunny(?) to at least be what he chose to be. This spawned a enormous animosity in him that made him want to be special. In the movie, there was a phrase that went " everybody is special ". That is almost the same as saying that nobody is special. This brings me back to my statement that life is a popularity poll. Being popular and well liked by the public is what matters now. Being special is just a by product. Soceity has evolved to such a stage that it rejects indviuality and wants a uniform society. What has happened to the right and freedom to express and be oneself. The incredibles is a potrayal of this fact. Society demanded that superheros no longer help save the world. Metaphorically, it mirrors society in saying that you got to be liked. Even if you are unique and special, your popularity determines your fate.

[edit on 26 novemeber]

take singapore idol for example. Talent is overshadowed by popularity. Take jerry ong for example. In contrast with beverly or jessia, he clearly lacked their talent. But he managed to endear himself to the masses and ultimately managed to stay on. Even ken lim has said so himself. Unless you appeal to the masses, your uniquness will be your downfall. In such society is like that. Unless you are liked, being original and special is nothing. Is this what is really better for mankind, where everyone moves towards uniformity. If such, than breakthroughts of any scale would be considered a miracle as uniformity shuts out people who have strayed. ultimately. this society is so closed minded that it does not allow us to freely explore ourselves and that we can never progress to the stage which we see in movies!

PS i know my arguement is definetally flawed ^^ but who cares =D
